About FTR Services Ltd

FTR Services Ltd is a specialist rail support business run by Kieran Murray, bringing together hands-on railway engineering, main line-standard maintenance and real-world film and television experience.

Who’s behind FTR

KIERAN MURRAY

Kieran began his railway career at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), first joining on work experience at 14 before returning as an apprentice. He completed a full railway apprenticeship, learning all parts of how railways run and operate.

He progressed through ranks becoming a train examiner, shunter, guard, driver and rail crane driver before becoming Carriage & Wagon Manager, taking responsibility for a large and varied fleet of historic coaches and wagons.

That role involved balancing heritage authenticity with modern safety, reliability and comfort requirements, while planning and overseeing maintenance, managing repairs, responding to faults and ensuring vehicles were service-ready when needed.

After the experience Kieran gained at North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR), he left to further his experience and run the operational side of another heritage railway.

Within operations, he learned to become a signalman and controller, learning all aspects and needs of operating a heritage railway.

This background forms the foundation of FTR: practical experience gained on the shop floor, combined with responsibility for real operational decisions.

Why that experience matters

Kieran’s work spans both heritage and main line-standard expectations, combining engineering knowledge with operational understanding.

This allows FTR to translate between technical railway requirements and commercial or production needs, offer grounded, workable advice rather than theoretical solutions, and slot easily into existing teams without adding complexity

Film and TV railway production

Film & TV experience

Alongside railway work, Kieran has supported a wide range of film and television productions involving real railways and rolling stock.

He has appeared on screen in Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard and worked behind the scenes on productions including Downton Abbey, Dad’s Army, Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones and factual series such as Monster Movers.

This experience means FTR understands how sets run, how departments work together and what is realistically achievable when working with real railways.

Why FTR exists

FTR was set up to solve a simple problem: projects often know what they want to achieve, but not how that fits with the realities of railways and vehicles.

By combining engineering, operations and production experience, FTR acts as a clear, practical link between those worlds, helping projects move forward safely, realistically and without unnecessary friction.
