When the
script meets
the real railway

FTR Services Ltd, run by Kieran Murray, provides specialist support for film and TV productions that involve railways, rolling stock or specialist vehicles. The role is simple: to bridge the gap between what the script or creative brief calls for and what can be delivered safely, realistically and practically on a real railway.

Kieran’s background is in carriage and wagon engineering and railway operations, not purely locations work. This means productions work with someone who understands both sides: how trains, coaches and locomotives actually behave, and what different production departments need from them on the day.

FTR can be brought in early at script or breakdown stage, or later when specific trains, locations, track or movements are already defined. Support can range from targeted advice through to full involvement in planning, sourcing and on-set delivery.

On-set railway coordination

Assessing whether planned railway scenes are realistic and achievable.

SOURCING

Identifying suitable locations, rolling stock and specialist vehicles.

COORDINATION

Planning and managing how trains and vehicles are moved and positioned safely.

ON-SITE DELIVERY

Proven on
set, trusted
behind the
scenes

Kieran Murray has worked across a wide range of productions, from major feature films to period drama, documentaries and factual television. This experience spans projects where railways are central to the story, as well as productions where trains and locations need to work convincingly in the background.

Credits include large-scale feature films such as Mission Impossible and Indiana Jones, period and drama productions using historic rolling stock including Downton Abbey, and factual series such as Monster Movers and other transport-focused programmes. Kieran has also appeared on screen in the Channel 5 series The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard, helping to showcase the real work involved in running a heritage railway.

While some projects place Kieran in front of the camera, the majority of FTR’s value is delivered behind the scenes: planning, coordinating and ensuring that the railway side of a production quietly does what the production needs it to do.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO PRODUCTIONS

  • First-hand understanding of how different departments work on set.
  • Clear awareness of production pressures, including time, safety, budget and continuity.
  • The ability to explain railway constraints in practical, straightforward terms.

From first
idea to a
track-ready
plan

Every production has different demands, but most railway-related work follows the same core needs. FTR supports productions from early planning through to delivery on set, providing practical solutions that balance creative intent with what can be achieved safely and realistically on a real railway, in a studio or set location.

Railway brought to a studio or set location

Bringing The Railway To Your Set

SET BUILDS

Building track, platforms and railway set elements for studios, backlots and locations.

TRANSPORT & INSTALL

Transporting rolling stock to site, positioning it safely, and integrating it into the set.

MODS & STUNTS

Repaints, interior changes, crash-prep, cut-downs, and specialist rigging (including on-side setups).

CREW & OPERATION

Arranging footplate crew and safe operation for train movements required on set.

What FTR can do for your production

Identifying and securing workable railway locations, from heritage lines and sidings to depots, stations and remote stretches of track. The focus is on places that look right on screen and can realistically support the shoot.

Sourcing suitable rolling stock and specialist vehicles, advising on authenticity, feasibility, and safe operation around live railway environments.

When filming on a railway isn’t practical, FTR can bring the railway to your set. This can include building track or platform elements, planning temporary installs, and integrating railway assets into studios, backlots or location builds.

Practical modifications to trains and vehicles for camera and story: repaints and liveries, interior layout changes, partial builds, cut-downs (including vehicles cut for crash scenes), and specialist rigging such as craning a vehicle onto its side.

Practical advice for trackside set builds, safe working methods, and coordination with railway teams so production activity doesn’t compromise operations. Ideal for shoots working on live, heritage or operational railway environments.

Guidance on dressing, period details and continuity touches that read well on camera and remain safe, compliant and reversible — from signage and fittings through to practical on-train dressing.

On-site supervision and liaison to keep shoots moving safely and efficiently, while protecting railway operations and maintaining authenticity. FTR can also arrange footplate crew to operate trains and manage movements required during filming.

Input at script and breakdown stage to identify constraints early, avoid costly surprises, and build workable, safe plans that still deliver the creative brief.

Let’s make it
work, from
planning
to shoot

Productions usually come to FTR once they know there is a railway element involved, but need clarity on how to handle it properly. The process is kept simple and flexible, depending on how much support you need.

1. Talk it through
A short call or email to outline the scenes, dates and any locations, stock or ideas already in place.

2. Get clear, practical options
FTR sets out realistic ways to achieve the brief, highlighting constraints, risks and cost drivers early so there are no surprises later.

3. Choose the level of support
Once a direction is agreed, FTR can stay lightly involved in the background or take a hands-on role in planning, coordination and on-set delivery.

Support can range from one-off advice through to full involvement across prep and shoot.

GOOD PROJECTS FOR FTR

Feature films and dramas with key railway sequences. Documentary and factual series focused on railways or heavy transport. Commercials and promos needing credible railway settings or movement. Smaller shoots that still want railway detail done properly the first time.

If you already have a script or an idea involving railways or vehicles, you can share a brief outline via the contact form below and take it from there.
